Jack Craft is an artist who has lived in the same house and worked the same ranch land his entire life. Operating the commercial cattle ranch occupies most of his day-to-day work.  This work and landscape form the structure of his art making practice. Craft works in two mediums: first sculpture, and second printmaking. His primary sculpture material is cast iron. He casts molten iron into solid objects and uses the sculptural mass as a metaphor for the arduous integrity of ranch life. His printmaking practice is tied directly to his sculptural objects. He uses the weight and form of his objects as a mark making tool to create surfaces that can be inked and printed. The monochromatic prints resulting from the sculpture’s interactions with the print matrices often resemble time-lapse images of celestial movement or geologic formations. The work is abstract and is grounded in geology and the metallurgy of ferrous metals. The sculpture-carved prints function in a disorienting manner, one moment evoking the unseen microscopic and the next the vast expanses of space. His deep connection to the ranch in particular and the Great Plains region in general, is reflected in this work that projects the essence of the American West and its attendant freedom. This work is evocative of the hardy resilience and inherent beauty of the Plains and its inhabitants. Jack has work in numerous private and public collections and is represented by galleries in Marfa, Texas and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
