Lichtenstein Pop Art

Lichtenstein Pop Art
AMoA Art Challenge #7

Drawing heavily from popular culture, like cartoons and advertisements, Roy Lichtenstein is key to the Pop Art movement.  Creating his images on canvas by hand, Lichtenstein recreated exaggerated versions of the dot pattern formed when ink is applied during printing.  Also called Ben-Day dots, these circles were an analog reproduction of a mechanical process and became a signature of his work.

Be inspired by popular culture!  Using the materials of your choice, create a work of Pop Art in the style of Roy Lichtenstein. For more information on Roy Lichtenstein, click here:

MATISSE CUT-OUTS

MATISSE CUT-OUTS
AMoA Art Challenge #5

Henri Matisse was a french artist who dramatically changed the course of modern art.  Part of the Fauvist movement (fauve is french for “wild beast”), Matisse is best known for his “wild” use of bright colors and dramatic brush strokes.  When advancing age and ill health hindered his ability to paint, Matisse developed a bolder and more simplified aesthetic.  Using nothing but white paper, gouache and scissors, he created cut paper collages that continued to redefine the brilliance of his career.

Get wild with shape and color!  Using simple materials such as paper, paint and scissors, create a cut paper collage in the style of Matisse.

SURREALISM WITH
SALVADOR DALI

SURREALISM WITH SALVADOR DALI
AMoA Art Challenge #4

Salvador Dali was a Spanish artist who drew on the imagination and the subconscious to create dream-like imagery.  One of the founders of the Surrealist movement, Dali experimented with creative thought and new ways of seeing the world.  Not limiting himself to painting, Dali also created films and sculptures of the bizarre and the impossible.  His most famous work of art, The Persistence of Memory, dispenses with reality and permanence as clocks melt amid a bleak landscape.

Let your dreams be your inspiration!  Working in the medium of your choice, create a surrealist work of art.

FRANK STELLA and the ART OF THE PROTRACTOR
AMoA Art Challenge #3

An American abstract painter, Frank Stella created his minimalist works in response to the Abstract Expressionist movement of the mid-twentieth century.  Influenced by artists such as Jackson Pollock and Donald Judd, Stella experimented with precise bands of vibrant color, shaped canvases and cut out forms, eventually moving into minimalist sculpture.  The artist is best known for paintings such as the ‘Protractor’ series, which marry aesthetics and geometry.

Be inspired by Frank Stella!  Working in the medium of your choice, break out your protractor and create a painting in the minimalist style of Frank Stella.

MONET SPRING LANDSCAPE

MONET’S SPRING LANDSCAPE
AMoA Art Challenge #2

Spring is upon us and we are taking our inspiration from artist Claude Monet. Considered the father of impressionism, Monet was well known for his landscape paintings and depictions of the leisurely life of Parisians at the end of the 19th century. Working outside, and often in series, Monet studied the effect of light at various times of day and throughout the seasons.

Be inspired by Monet! Using the medium of your choice, create a landscape in the style of Monet that reflects the changing season.
