This exhibition features a selection of paintings, drawings, photographs, and installations that reveal some of the many ways artists connect with nature, all drawn from the Austin Museum of Art and local collections. There is great stylistic variety, in part because of the wide time span in which the works were completed, from the 1920s up to September 2009. Some of the works are traditional, representational landscapes which offer long and wide vistas, while others distill or abstract the energy of the natural environment or celebrate the plant- or wildlife that live there.
Artists featured will include Nicholas Brewer, Alexander Calder, Margie Crisp, Lee Friedlander, Faith Gay, Grace Spaulding John, Jules Buck Jones, Morris Walton Leader, Mickey Mayfield, Beverly Penn, Earl Staley, Kunie Sugiura, Dan Sutherland, Liz Ward, and Robert Ziebell.
Art and Nature is organized by Dana Friis-Hansen, Executive Director and Chief Curator. We are grateful to our 2009 Exhibition Seasonal Supporters. Major Sponsor: Wentwood Capital Advisors. Sponsors: Berman Family Foundation, Bettye & Bill Nowlin, and Still Water Foundation. The Austin Museum of Art funded in part by Museum Trustees, Members, and Patrons. Additional Support is provided by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division, The Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
