Hints & Tips for Families

The FamilyLab gives visitors of all ages the tools to interpret art and make connections to the world around them.

WHO
A family can be any group of people, any age! We ask that adults stay with children under 12.

WHAT
Everything in the FamilyLab is made for you to touch and explore. Only two simple rules - help keep the room clean and respect other visitors.

WHEN
The FamilyLab is open the same hours as the Museum, and is free for you to visit with regular admission.

WHERE
Located just next to the galleries, the FamilyLab is a great place to stop by after your tour of the exhibition. Find ideas to extend your learning and creating at home, in Austin, or on the go!

WHY
The FamilyLab is designed for families to learn together. The only limit is your imagination, so have fun and be inspired together!

Five easy ways to make the most of your visit:

1) Be prepared
In the FamilyLab, you could be doing anything—from painting to building, playing to creating. This means that you should come prepared to get a little messy and be creative. Download the Looking at Art Together family guide to learn more about the current exhibition.

2) Know your museum manners
Before visiting AMOA, review how to act in the museum galleries. Remember to not touch the artwork, to keep your voices at a normal level and to stick together. If you would like to know more about museum manners, take a look at our helpful guide.

3) Take your time
There is so much to see and do at AMOA that you won't want to be rushing home. Make sure you give yourself plenty time to fully explore our exhibitions and make use of the FamilyLab.

4) Don't miss out!
Our family activities page and calendar is jam packed with all the family-friendly fun you can handle. Make sure you take a look when deciding on which day to visit us.

5) Dig deeper and learn more
