The Art School

Volunteers ages 13 and up are actively recruited for all art school classes with particular emphasis on children’s classes. For children’s classes, the following three criteria are used when interviewing a prospective volunteer:

  • Enjoy working with children—experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Enjoy art! Again, experience is nice, but not necessary.
  • Willing to make a commitment to attend all classes, coming 15 minutes early to help set-up and staying 15 minutes late to help clean-up.

Volunteer Duties
Adult and Teen Volunteers at The Art School assist instructors with various activities related to instruction within the classroom. Instructors begin by orienting their volunteer to the class expectations. Volunteers should be given an outline of the class on the first day of class.  Volunteers are expected to arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of class to help with classroom set-up, which can include materials distribution, physical arrangement of the space and greeting students. During the course of class, volunteers aid the instructor through facilitating instruction, helping with any children that need extra assistance, snacks, supervision on restroom walk in the children’s program.  At the conclusion of class, volunteers assist with clean-up and dismissal of students which takes an average of fifteen minutes after the scheduled class time. In addition, volunteers will be asked to evaluate the class.

Teen Volunteers
The Teen Volunteer Program is available for young people ages 13-18 and runs throughout the year with special emphasis placed on the summer semester. Teens work in the children’s program at the main campus for The Art School, Laguna Gloria.

Note: We do not typically need volunteers for adult classes. Any openings will be listed on this site.

Training and Orientation
Training is provided, and care is taken to match each volunteer’s unique skills and duties with the appropriate classroom experience. Volunteer opportunities are available and scheduled when most convenient for the volunteer on weekdays, weekends, or evenings.
